Né le 21 août 1567 au château de Sales, à Thorens-Glières (Haute-Savoie), François de Sales grandit dans une famille catholique appartenant à l’aristocratie savoyarde. Son père, maître d’hôtel du comte Sébastien de Luxembourg-Martigues, était également seigneur de Sales.
