Sustainable Mobility: The Governorate of Vatican City State Launches Electric Car Leasing Program for Employees

Vatican City, June 30, 2025 – The Governorate continues to advance its commitment to more sustainable mobility.

A new agreement has been signed with leading companies in mobility services and long-term leasing to initiate a pilot phase dedicated exclusively to the leasing of electric vehicles for Governorate employees to use for commuting between home and work.

This initiative marks a substantial step forward, in line with the recent installation and activation of a new network of electric vehicle charging stations within the Vatican City State—an important move in the transition toward low-emission transportation.

The decision to begin with a fully electric fleet aligns with the environmental policies promoted by the Governorate of Vatican City State. Thanks to the infrastructure already made available within the State, which increasingly prioritizes reducing the environmental impact of vehicle traffic—including that generated by employees’ private vehicles—this initiative provides concrete evidence of the Governorate’s active commitment to improving climate conditions, including in the broader metropolitan area of Rome, in which the Vatican City State is located.

Demonstrating both environmental awareness and care for its employees, the Governorate once again acts as a community in service for the common good.

The agreement calls for the initial introduction of various electric vehicle models under medium- and long-term lease agreements, provided by leading sustainable mobility companies. The vehicles will come fully equipped with maintenance and assistance services, and will feature the latest technologies to ensure comfort, safety, and minimal environmental impact.

Volkswagen Group (Volkswagen and Škoda Auto) was the first to join the Governorate’s “Ecological Conversion 2030” initiative, having supplied the State's fleet last year with dozens of next-generation 100% electric vehicles.

Volkswagen Financial Services (providing vehicles from the Volkswagen Group) has reaffirmed its commitment to the initiative by presenting the first leasing offer.

This initial phase will be closely monitored to assess environmental and organizational impacts, with the goal of eventually expanding the initiative to include additional vehicles. In doing so, the Governorate continues to strengthen its role as a promoter of innovation and environmental responsibility.
