Governatorate

The Governorate exercises its power and functions, attributed to ensure the absolute and visible independence of the Holy See, including in the international arena, in fulfilling the universal and pastoral mission of the Supreme Pontiff. The Governorate is composed by the Government Bodies and other entities that cooperate in exercising the executive power of Vatican City State and in the areas mentioned in Articles 15 and 16 of the Lateran Treaty, in accordance to their specific legal status. The Governorate carries out any other activities required in serving the Holy See.

1.The organization and functions of the Governorate are regulated by the Law on Governance and by regulations adopted by the Pontifical Commission or by its President:

  1. The Governorate and administrative structure’s proper and exclusive duties, as mentioned in in Article 4 include:
  2. security, public order and civil protection;
  3. protection of health, public health, public hygiene of the environment and ecology;
  4. all economic activities, postal, philately and customs services;
  5. connectivity and network infrastructure, building activities, technical, plumbing and electrical systems and their protection and maintenance;
  6. the preservation, enhancement and use of the artistic complex of the Vatican Museums, as well as the supervision of the assets of the entire artistic, historic, archaeological and ethnographic heritage;
  7. any other function required by Law or by other provisions
