Official announcements regarding stamp issues, postal stationery, folders, souvenir envelopes and special and ordinary cancellations can be found in this section.

This section also includes all information regarding requests for cancellations of philatelic products with Vatican City State stamps that are still valid for postage (stamps issued after 1 January 2001).

SPECIAL CANCELLATIONS

Special cancellations and the ways to obtain them are announced from time to time, through communiqués printed in “L’Osservatore Romano”, and announcements featured on the website.

1 - Commemorative Cancellations

Commemorative cancellations are issued on the following occasions: Easter, Christmas, pastoral visits and Apostolic Journeys abroad,  when souvenir envelopes are issued by the Postal and Philatelic Service, when Vatican Bodies participate in philatelic and numismatic conferences in Italy or abroad and on anniversaries or recurring events that have a special meaning for the Church, for the Holy See and for Vatican City State.

With regards to First Day of Issue cancellations, customers who receive series of stamps from the Vatican Office for Philatelic and Numismatic Sales and Marketing, via mail, can have an extension of the time period, if they can demonstrate that the delayed reception of the philatelic product is due to postal error or other setbacks.

Procedure for returning cancelled items

Considering the terms indicated above, if a request is received within five days of the date of issue of the cancellation, the cancelled product will be returned in the following ways:

  • unsealed, ordinary or registered post: the postcards or letters should include the sender’s name and address and be stamped with stamps that are still valid for postage and in line with current postal tariffs;
  • in a sealed envelope, via ordinary or registered post: the product to be cancelled should be inside an envelope with the sender’s name and address and stamped with stamps that are still valid for postage and in line with current postal tariffs.

If a request is received five days after the release of the cancellation, the return of the cancelled item can only take place in a sealed envelope.
