A Guide to the Stars
A Jesuit's Guide to the Stars - Exploring Wonder, Beauty, and Science, a new book by Jesuit Brother Guy Consolmagno, Director of the Vatican Observatory and of the Vatican Observatory Foundation, was presented on Monday evening, 3 February, in the Apostolic Nunciature in Washington D.C.
The presentation was presided by Cardinal Cristophe Pierre, Apostolic Nuncio in the United States of America. Participants included, Paul M. Pohl, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Foundation, Jesuit Father David Brown, astronomer of the Vatican Observatory, Jesuit Father Robert Lorenz of the Vatican Observatory Research Group, Fr. Cristopher Corbally, astronomer of the Vatican Observatory, and Sr. Raffaella Petrini, Secretary General of the Governorate of Vatican City State, who had previously taken part in the annual meeting of the Foundation’s Board of Directors, of which she is a member. (This year the meeting took place in Washington D.C. instead of Tucson). Also present was Fr. Gabriele Gionti, Deputy Director of the Vatican Observatory of Castel Gandolfo.
Brother Consolmagno’s engaging new book allows readers to explore the universe in the company of the Pope’s astronomer and participate in a journey through the cosmos in which the author combines Scriptures, tradition and man’s search for God in all things.
In his book which contains more than 70 spectacular images of the cosmos, Brother Consolmagno connects his experience of faith with his knowledge as a scientist, revealing the universe as a fascinating reality to be contemplated and a joyful way to find God.
Brother Guy Consolmagno is from Detroit, Michigan. He holds a Master’s degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and a PhD in planetary science from the University of Arizona. He entered the Jesuit Order in 1989 and has served at the Vatican Observatory since 1993. Pope Francis appointed him Director of the Observatory in 2015.
