“Capture Nature” in the Vatican Gardens

An itinerary for families promoted by Vatican Museums in the “green lung” of the State

Two hours in the Vatican Gardens, in the green heart of Vatican City State, is a project promoted by Vatican Museums and aimed at parents with children. Launched on 13 July and lasting through 26 October, “Capture Nature” offers the first guided tour dedicated specifically to families, where they can spend two hours in the Vatican Gardens, immersed in nature and learning outdoors. The tours take place on Saturdays. The itinerary in nature is inspired by Pope Francis’ Encyclical Letter, Laudato Si’ and has the aim of raising awareness in adults and children on issues related to care for creation and protecting our Common Home.

Families are led by experts to discover the “green lung” of Vatican City State: the Biblical Garden, the Forest, the English Garden, the Zitella Fountain, Casina Pio IVOur Lady of the Guard and Our Lady of Fatima — places where Popes have often taken their walks, papal coats of arm and many anecdotes.

The itinerary through nature, art and faith is enriched by games, workshops and play activities, among which are a treasure hunt, the creation of a Vatican “masterpiece” using the technique known as frottage, the discovery of turtles, identifying plants mentioned in the Bible, “The Wood Wide Web and the Family of Trees” and “Rubbish or Nature?” to learn to distinguish natural products from synthetic ones.

The guided tour (available in English and Italian) is designed for families with children between the ages of 6 and 12 and is fully accessible also to people with sensory, motor and intellectual disabilities. At the end of the tour, families can visit the Vatican Museums on their own at no additional cost.
