The President of the Governorate meets with the President of the Bavarian State Parliament

Ilse Aigner, President of the Bavarian Landtag (the parliament of the Free State of Bavaria), accompanied by an official delegation, was received on the morning of September 10 by Sister Raffaella Petrini, President of the Governorate of Vatican City State.

The official delegation included the Vice Presidents of the Landtag: Tobias Reiß, Alexander Hold, and Markus Rinderspacher.

At the conclusion of the meeting, Parliament President Aigner presented a gift of some traditional Bavarian products and a reproduction of the monumental statue of Bavaria. The impressive original statue stands near the Theresienwiese, the symbolic site of Munich’s Oktoberfest. It is 18 meters high and serves as an allegorical personification of Bavaria. This imposing bronze sculpture represents an extraordinary technical achievement, as it was the first colossal work made entirely of this material since antiquity.

The Bavarian King Ludwig I commissioned its creation in 1837 as part of a broader project celebrating national identity. Behind it stands the Ruhmeshalle, a kind of classical-style hall of fame, which houses the busts of eminent figures from Bavarian history.

The entire project was conceived as a symbol of Bavarian patriotism and was overseen by Leo von Klenze, the king’s trusted architect, together with sculptor Ludwig Schwanthaler. The casting of the statue was entrusted to the renowned Munich founder Johann Baptist Stiglmaier, and later to his nephew Ferdinand von Miller.
