New Post Office in Saint Peter’s Square
A new Post Office in Saint Peter’s Square to welcome pilgrims and visitors to the Vatican during the Jubilee
On Thursday morning, 19 December, Cardinal Fernando Vérgez Alzaga, President of the Governorate of Vatican City State, and Mr. Matteo Del Fante and Mr. Giuseppe Lasco, respectively, Chief Executive Officer and General Manager of Poste Italiane, will inaugurate a new post office in Saint Peter’s Square.
The new post office, donated by Poste Italiane, will be located on the left side of the Square and will replace the older Franzisella mobile post office, that had been placed in the Square on 20 December 2010.
Specifically built to be quickly dismantled, the new prefabricated vehicle will be placed in the exact same spot as the previous post office and has its same dimensions.
The post office’s floor, its main load-bearing structure and furniture are all made out of wood, bearing in mind its environmental impact, throughout the phases of construction, assembly, dismantling, re-assembly, and final disposal. The new post office has been built with features that make it easily accessible to people with disabilities.
In this way, the Vatican’s Postal Service aims to provide a more up to date facility to respond to the needs of visitors seeking to purchase stamps, send mail or use other services.
The inauguration ceremony will be attended by Sr. Raffaella Petrini, Secretary General of the Governorate, Mr. Giuseppe Puglisi-Alibrandi, Deputy Secretary General, Mr. Salvatore Farina, Director of the Directorate for Infrastructures and Services, Mr. Antonino Intersimone, Director of the Directorate of Telecommunications and Information Systems, Mr. Luigi Salimbeni, Deputy Director of the same Directorate, and Fr. Felice Bruno, F.D.P., Office Manager of the Post and Philately Service.
