Appointment of members of the Commission on Artificial Intelligence

Sr. Raffaella Petrini, President of the Governorate of Vatican City State, has appointed the members of the Commission on Artificial Intelligence. The five members include officials from the Legal Office, from the Directorate of Telecommunications and Information Systems, and from the Directorate of Security and Civil Protection Services, in accordance with the Guidelines on Artificial Intelligence that took effect on 1 January 2025, with the Pontifical Commission for Vatican City State’s Decree No. DCCII. The appointment is a step forward in the implementation of the prescribed norms.
In accordance with the Guidelines, the Commission’s chief tasks will be to draft laws and regulations on the use of artificial Intelligence, provide opinions on proposals for the testing and implementation of systems within the Vatican territory and identify potential risks to the Governorate. The Commission will draft a semi-annual report on the impact of the use of Artificial Intelligence on Vatican City State.
Commission members will serve a three-year term, with the possibility of renewal or replacement by the President of the Governorate.
In is the first time that the Governorate regulates Artificial Intelligence. The newly appointed Commission will carry out its activities with respect for the centrality of the person and social justice, bearing in mind dignity, ethics and transparency, the very principles that inspired the drafting of the Guidelines.
