Global Innovation and Transformation

Sr. Raffaella Petrini, Secretary General of the Governorate of Vatican City State, will lead a State Delegation at the World Telecommunication Standardization Assembly (WTSA-24), scheduled to be held in New Delhi, India, from 15 to 24 October 2024. During the Assembly, which will meet after the Global Standard Symposium (GSS-24),  which will take place on 14 October,  Sr. Petrini will deliver an official address.

The Delegation representing Vatican City State includes the Secretary General of the Governorate of Vatican City State, as Head of Delegation, Msgr. Lucio Adrian Ruiz, Secretary of the Dicastery for Communication, as Deputy Head of Delegation, Mr. Antonino Intersimone and Mr. Luigi Salimbeni, Director and Deputy Director, respectively, of the Governorate’s Directorate of Telecommunications and Information Systems, and Mr. Francesco Masci and Mr. Sergio Salvatori, Director and technical officer, respectively, of the technological department of the Dicastery for Communication.

WTSA takes place every four years and has the aim of defining changes and innovation in normative regulation, within the area of responsibility of the Telecommunication Standardization Sector of ITU, ITU-T.

ITU-T brings together experts from the whole world to develop international standards known as ITU-T Recommendations, that serve to define the global infrastructure of information and communication technologies (ICT). Standards are essential for the interoperability of the ICT. They permit global communication (vocal messages, video or data), by guaranteeing that the networks and ICT devices of different countries speak the same language.

International ICT standards try to avoid costly market battles over technologies, and create conditions of equality with emerging market businesses, providing them with access to new markets. It is widely believed that they are essential in helping developing countries build their infrastructure and stimulate economic development.  Through economies of scale, ICT standards can reduce costs for everyone: producers, operators and consumers.

GSS-24 precedes the work of the WTSA-24. This will be the fifth Global Standards Symposium, a dynamic forum that gathers together thought leaders, innovators and decision makers from the whole world, and is open both to ITU members and to non-members.

GSS-24 will be chaired by Dr. Rajkumar Upadhyay, Chief Executive Officer and Chaiman Board at the Center for Developments of Telematics & Chair of GSS-24. With the theme “Charting the Next Digital Wave: Emerging Technologies, Innovation, and International Standards”, GSS-24 will explore how cutting edge technologies and international standards are reshaping our digital future. The event will include high-level discussions with ministers and leaders in the sector, on the future of innovation and the start of a positive process of global transformation.
