Two Manna Ash Trees Planted in the Vatican Gardens

In line with the Encyclical Laudato si’

On the occasion of National Tree Day, Friday, 21 November, a Fraxinus ornus and a Fraxinus angustifolia—from which the traditional Madonie manna is obtained—were planted in the Vatican Gardens. Presiding over the ceremony was Archbishop Emilio Nappa, Secretary General of the Governorate of the Vatican City State, who emphasized that planting new trees to keep creation alive and respect the environment is fully in line with the principles set out in Pope Francis’ Encyclical Laudato si’. “It is even more so,” he said, “when the plants in question have a clear biblical reference.”

On Saturday, November 16, in the Saint Thomas More Catholic Chapel and Center at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, the President of the Governorate, Sr. Raffaella Petrini, delivered The Mary Field and Vincent DeP Goubeau Lecture on Women's Role in the Church & Society  regarding the many complementary dimensions of exercising authority, service and the practice of care.

The Managerial Approach of Care

A management model inspired by humanism requires “the contribution of leaders capable of building relationships of trust, showing interest in people’s personal stories and circumstances, and willing to accompany their collaborators through the inevitable challenges that every organization faces.” With these words, Sr. Raffaella Petrini, President of the Governorate of Vatican City State, delivered the Lectio Magistralis for the inauguration of the 43rd academic year of the University of Tor Vergata in Rome. The ceremony took place on Friday, 21 November, in the Ennio Morricone Auditorium of the School of Humanities and Philosophy.

Pilgrims of hope  in a divided world

In their commitment to defending the faith and serving the poor, the Knights of the Order of Malta become “pilgrims of hope” in a complex and divided world. This was emphasized by Sr. Raffaella Petrini, President of the Governorate of Vatican City State, during the Mass for the investiture of new members of the American Association of the Order of Malta, led by its President, Kenneth Craig. The celebration was presided over by Cardinal Timothy Dolan, Archbishop of New York, in St. Patrick’s Cathedral on Friday afternoon, November 14. Among those present at the rite were several members of the Sovereign Council.
